Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Nexium, is in talks with US regulators over the potential risks of a drug that is supposed to treat acid reflux disease, the manufacturer says.

A study by Pfizer says some people taking the drug had heart problems when they took it before a heart attack or angina. That's the same heart disease drug used to treat heart failure in adults. The study was published online Monday in the British Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The FDA has warned that the drug may cause heart attacks and strokes, which can occur during treatment with Nexium or other drugs that also reduce heart attacks.

The drug is sold under the brand name AstraZeneca, and was approved for marketing in 2001.

Pfizer, the drug's maker, said that it has received tentative approval from the FDA for the treatment of acid reflux disease, or heartburn, in adults over the age of 55. It is approved for use by adults in the United States, Japan and Canada.

Pfizer is currently working to develop a drug that would be able to treat acid reflux, or heartburn, in people taking the drug and people who have it. But it is still not clear how much risk it poses to people who use the drug.
